Your Guide to Investing in Catharine Blaine’s “Many Families; One Community” Giving Campaign

What is the Giving Campaign?

Contributions to the Giving Campaign help to close the gap that exists between district funding and the actual cost of the quality education Blaine students receive. The caliber of the Catharine Blaine K-8 experience greatly depends on the resources available to the school. The Giving Campaign, along with our other PTA fundraisers (Auction and Move-a-thon), helps ensure there are adequate resources every year to sustain and enhance our school.

We have two goals with the Giving Campaign: raising $150,000 toward our $250,000 total goal and increasing participation, at any donation level. As we stated earlier, we can only continue to avoid layoffs and the strain of split-grade classrooms through increased fundraising.

Don’t you also have a fundraising auction?

Yes. But frankly, there’s nothing easier and with less overhead than the Giving Campaign. Auctions are wonderful fundraising and community building events, and Blaine will have an amazing auction which will take place in March 2018 as well as the kids’ favorite, Move-a-thon in June 2018, where we will raise another remainder of our goal for the year. The Giving Campaign is really the ultimate fundraiser though: You write a check and the entirety of your donation goes straight towards the support of our programs. In addition, it’s 100% tax deductible!

Our family may be redistricted when Magnolia School eventually opens. Why should I give to Catharine Blaine?

At this point, the District has postponed the opening of the Magnolia School until, at least, the 2019-2020 school year. We are unlikely to know the boundaries for another school year. Generally, funds raised this year cover next year’s expenses, so the Magnolia School opening will not draw families from Blaine in this school year or next.

Our Giving Campaign theme this year is “Many Families; One Community” and our school intends to act on that sentiment as we anticipate the opening of a new neighborhood school in the next couple of years. Once the boundaries are clear and the opening is officially scheduled, Catharine Blaine PTA intends to “seed” the new PTA with an appropriate percentage of money raised in the preceding school year, as per common practices in PTAs nationwide.

I have more than one student attending Catharine Blaine. Is the Giving Campaign asking me to donate $365 for each student, or as a family?
We are asking for $365 for each child attending Catharine Blaine. Your donation – along with money raised through the Gala and Move-A-Thon, will ensure this level of quality instruction will continue this school year. Our school only receives less than $70 per child from Seattle Public Schools (after teacher salaries), which doesn’t even cover the essentials.

Where does this money go?

INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT: In the 2017-18 school year, over 57% of the PTA budget will go toward instructional and staff support. This includes $104,250 contribution to the teacher salary budget.  This significant portion of our budget prevents staff layoffs and the strain of split-grade classrooms throughout K-8. The balance provides for our two recess monitors and ongoing teacher professional development courses.

 

ARTS, ATHLETICS, & TECHNOLOGY: 15% enhances our Arts, Athletics and Technology budgets,  including excellent programs like Middle School Band and 4th/5th Grade Instrumental Music, funds for Middle School Athletics, updates to P.E. equipment, and new technology throughout the school. Additional funds from the 2017 Spring Auction’s Raise the Paddle of about $18K are earmarked to further supplement the Arts at Blaine.

 

STUDENT ENRICHMENT & COMMUNITY-BUILDING: 14% provides enriching experiences for our students as well as community-building events. This category includes student assemblies like phone and internet safety and family nights like Cultural Night at Blaine. Enrichment funds pay for our T.I.G.E.R. Traits Recognition program, Tiger Trails Running Club, and $200/teacher reimbursements for teachers to cover enhancements in their classrooms. The balance of the “enrichment” funding covers updates to our school library collections and valuable resources dedicated to families in need.

 

CLASSROOM BASICS: Just under 12% covers basic classroom and school supplies as well as special funding called “Mini-Grants” teachers can apply for to cover the costs of larger classroom improvements like new rugs, project based learning, additional classroom tech or special software resources.

 

MISCELLANEOUS ADMINISTRATIVE: The remaining 1.7% covers administrative costs like website fees and various insurance coverages carried by the PTA.

I am the parent of a 8th grader. Why should I donate?

Simply put – Pay it forward! When your child joined Catharine Blaine as an incoming Kindergarten student, they benefited from funds raised the previous year. Now, as an active part of the Blaine community, it’s your turn to pay it forward and help ensure the strength of this award winning school that has benefited your child and your family.

How much should I give?

Our fundraising goal for the Giving Campaign this year is $150,000. With that in mind, we listed a suggested donation for the Giving Campaign of $365 per child. A DOLLAR A DAY. Obviously some families are able to give more and some less, but ALL amounts are welcome and truly appreciated.

I’m ready to donate…how do I do it?

There are three easy ways to donate:

      1. If you are paying by check:  Fill out the donation card included in your family packet. Or print a new one here. Send it in your child’s folder, mail it in the return envelope,  or drop it in the collection box in the main office. Just one per family is required.
      2. Make a single, secure donation online using a credit card here. No need to mail your response card if you donate online.
      3. Make monthly installments online here.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes! Your donation is 100% tax-deductible. Catharine Blaine PTA is a 503(c) non-profit. Our tax ID number is 91-1116257

How do I get a company match?

Company Matches are a HUGE deal for the Giving Campaign. Microsoft, the Gates Foundation, Starbucks, and Boeing are just a few of the many generous employers that offer matching funds. Here is a link to our current list of matching companies. This list is not complete, so be sure to ask your company if they match.

If your employer offers a company match, please help us make your donation go farther by taking the time to apply for your company match. If you have coworkers who are also parents at Catharine Blaine, please encourage them to make the effort to secure the match too.

What if I can’t afford to give right now?

We completely understand that this is a reality for many Blaine families. Any amount you can give, no matter how small, is welcome. If you simply cannot give this year, that is truly okay. We did include a space on the form where you can volunteer your time in lieu of or in addition to a gift, and we hope you’ll consider that option.
